Students apprehended following carving of swastika into office door of UA-Fayetteville dean

The dean’s office of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville was recently vandalized with racist language and offensive stereotypes. The incident occurred on June 6, with a swastika and derogatory language carved onto the door of assistant dean Romona West, as well as defaced stickers for diversity and inclusion programs on another door in the building.

The University of Arkansas Police Department identified two suspects, Evan Duane Wright and Connor Maxwell Winters, who have since been booked into the Washington County jail on misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

The vandalism was condemned by the university community, including the African and African American Studies Department and the Associated Student Government, who released statements denouncing hate speech and discrimination. However, UA-Fayetteville Chancellor Charles Robinson has yet to comment on the incident.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for diversity, inclusion, and respect on campus. The university is taking steps to address the issue, with the case being reviewed by both the City of Fayetteville prosecutor’s office and the university’s Office of Student Standards and Conduct. Students and faculty are urged to continue promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the community.
