A Guatemalan man, Angel Zapet-Alvarado, was shot by an Arkansas state trooper during an incident in Rogers, according to a news release from the Arkansas State Police. Zapet-Alvarado is facing charges of second-degree battery and other charges are pending. The trooper stopped Zapet-Alvarado’s vehicle after observing it speeding in heavy traffic on Interstate 49. The man refused to exit and wrestled the trooper’s stun gun from her before she fired one round, wounding him in the right temple. Zapet-Alvarado was treated at Mercy hospital and then taken into custody. The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident to determine if the use of deadly force was justified under Arkansas law.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders praised the trooper and a motorist who intervened, calling them heroes for ensuring their communities’ safety. She also criticized President Joe Biden’s administration for creating a border crisis that allowed criminals like Zapet-Alvarado into the country. Col. Mike Hagar of the State Police expressed concerns about the suspect being an undocumented immigrant, emphasizing that such lawlessness will not be tolerated in Arkansas.
The incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face and the ongoing debate over immigration policies in the United States. The investigation and legal proceedings will determine the outcome of this case as the community grapples with issues of safety and border security.
