After President Joe Biden announced his exit from the November 5 election, US Vice President Kamala Harris has quickly gained Democratic support for her presidential campaign. Since Biden endorsed her as his successor, Harris’s campaign has raised $200 million, with 66 percent of the donations coming from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle. Over 170,000 volunteers have also signed up to help with phone banking, canvassing, and other get-out-the-vote efforts.
The momentum for Harris is clear, as key Democratic figures such as Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Barack and Michelle Obama have endorsed her candidacy. Despite some Republicans, like Donald Trump, labeling her as a “crazy liberal” and claiming she wants to defund the police, polls show Harris and Trump in a close race with only 100 days left until the election.
Harris remains the underdog in the race, but she is confident that her campaign is gaining steam. The upcoming Democratic National Convention will determine if she becomes the party’s nominee. Harris’s swift rise as the Democratic frontrunner comes after Biden’s candidacy faltered following a disappointing debate performance against Trump in June.
With strong fundraising numbers and a growing support base, Harris’s campaign is ready for a tough fight leading up to the election. As campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu noted, this will be a very close race that could ultimately be decided by just a few voters in key states.
