In a recent speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a warning to the United States regarding the potential deployment of long-range missiles in Germany in 2026. Putin stated that if the US follows through with this plan, Russia will respond by stationing similar missiles within striking distance of the west.
The US and Germany had previously announced their intention to deploy long-range fire capabilities in Germany as part of their commitment to Nato and European defense. These deployments would include SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic weapons with greater range than current capabilities in Europe.
Putin warned that the deployment of these missiles could trigger a cold war-style missile crisis, with potential threats to Russian territory. He criticized the US for stoking tensions and pointed out other recent military moves, such as the transfer of Typhon missile systems to Denmark and the Philippines.
Drawing parallels to the Pershing II missile deployments in western Europe in 1979, Putin emphasized the potential risks of escalating missile capabilities in the region. He also reiterated Russia’s ability to resume production of intermediate and shorter range nuclear-capable missiles if necessary.
