A Guatemalan man was injured in an incident on Interstate 49 after resisting arrest and assaulting a trooper during a traffic stop. Arkansas State Police reported that Angel Zapet-Alvarado, 26, refused to comply with the trooper’s orders and wrestled her taser away, resulting in the trooper firing her service weapon and injuring him. Zapet-Alvarado, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, was treated at a hospital and then taken into custody.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and ASP Col. Mike Hagar praised the trooper and a civilian who intervened, calling them heroes for ensuring public safety. They criticized Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the border crisis and emphasized the importance of law enforcement in maintaining order. Zapet-Alvarado faces charges of second-degree battery and is under investigation by Homeland Security.
The trooper, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation, is being supported by ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division. The case will be reviewed by the prosecuting attorney to determine the legality of using deadly force. The incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the challenges posed by illegal immigration.
