Second anniversary of prison attack prompts Kyiv to call for UN investigation in Russia-Ukraine war live | World news

Kyiv is calling for an investigation by the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross into a deadly prison attack that occurred in Russian-occupied Ukraine two years ago. The attack at the Olenivka facility in Donetsk resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Ukrainian prisoners and injuries to 130 others. Both Moscow and Kyiv have blamed each other for the attack, with Kyiv calling it a terrorist act.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has vowed to hold Russia accountable for the attack and ensure that justice is served. The Ukrainian foreign ministry has accused Russian officials of obstructing independent investigators from accessing the site of the attack. Ukrainian defense ministry intelligence has alleged that Russian-backed separatists collaborated with the FSB and mercenary group Wagner to carry out the attack.

In other news, Russian forces are intensifying their assaults near the strategic city of Pokrovsk, with Ukrainian forces fighting off 52 Russian attacks in the past 24 hours. The city is an important transport hub and supply route for Ukrainian-held outposts. Additionally, eleven people, including three children, were injured in Russian strikes on the Kherson region.

The Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, and Science has arrived in Kyiv for meetings with Ukrainian officials to discuss joint projects and cooperation in the cultural and educational spheres. This visit comes after Ukraine and Japan signed a 10-year security agreement that includes defense assistance, humanitarian aid, and technical/financial cooperation.
