Shortage of Paxlovid in Arkansas Pharmacies

High costs for the COVID medication Paxlovid have led to shortages in some pharmacies in Arkansas amid the ongoing summer wave of cases. The Arkansas Pharmacists Association has highlighted the challenges faced by pharmacies in keeping the medication in stock, with some health plans not covering it or requiring high copays. The Vice President of Innovation at the Association, Bri Morris, emphasized the reimbursement challenges faced by pharmacies due to the expensive nature of Paxlovid, making it difficult to maintain stocks and provide healthcare services to the community. The owner of Kavanaugh Pharmacy, Anne Pace, echoed these sentiments, noting the struggle in keeping Paxlovid in stock due to the costs involved. Morris suggested that state legislation could help address this issue and enable pharmacists to carry and get paid for the product. While most COVID patients do not require Paxlovid for symptom management, it remains an important treatment option for those who do. Despite a recent increase in COVID hospitalizations in Arkansas, efforts are being made to ensure access to necessary medications amid the ongoing wave of cases. The state also continues to be ranked “very high” for COVID levels in wastewater testing, indicating the prevalence of the virus in the community. The situation highlights the importance of affordable access to medications during the ongoing public health crisis.
