Crouser’s pursuit of third gold medal halted | The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Two-time Olympic shot put champion and University of Arkansas men’s volunteer assistant Ryan Crouser is facing challenges as he prepares for the Paris Games. Crouser has been dealing with a nerve issue in his right arm that required a procedure three months ago, threatening his chances at a three-peat. Despite his injuries, Crouser won the U.S. Olympic trials with a winning attempt of 74 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Crouser’s training routine now includes extensive rehabilitation for his arm, with ice sessions, physical therapy visits, massages, and arm exercises. He has had to adjust his training to avoid aggravating his injuries, spending as much time on rehab as on shot-put mechanics. Despite the setbacks, Crouser has been able to increase his throwing sessions and is confident heading into the Olympics.

Crouser’s challenging spring and summer have tested him mentally, but he remains determined to compete at his best. He is relying on a revamped technique known as the “Crouser Slide,” which helped him break the world record last year. Crouser’s preparations have been compared to an airplane ready to take off on a short runway, with uncertainty about his form but excitement about the potential to surprise himself.

As he faces uncertainty about his physical condition, Crouser is focused on giving his best performance in Paris and overcoming the obstacles he has faced in his journey to the Olympics.
