LRPD requests access to home security cameras in order to combat crime

The Little Rock Police Department is launching a new program called ‘Eyes on the Rock’ that aims to reduce crime in the metro area by accessing private security cameras. Mayor Frank Scott Jr. announced that residents and businesses can register their cameras with the LRPD to help the real-time crime center. There are two registration options available, with one allowing police to access footage only in the case of a nearby crime, and the other providing real-time access during emergencies.

Residents and businesses can purchase a device from Fusus to integrate their cameras with the LRPD, with prices ranging from $350 to $7,200. Mayor Scott assured that the cameras do not use facial recognition technology and residents who opt into the program will receive an ‘Eyes on the Rock’ yard sign. LRPD Chief Heath Helton emphasized the importance of integrating public and private cameras for police use, citing the tragic incidents like the Uvalde school shooting in Texas, where real-time information sharing could have made a difference.

The Mayor’s proposed 1% sales tax initiative would provide additional funding to the real-time crime center and help achieve the goal of 30,000 registered cameras. The Little Rock Board of Directors will vote on whether to put the sales tax proposal before voters in the November election. The initiative aims to improve the collaboration between law enforcement and the community to enhance public safety in Little Rock.
