The wreckage of a Cambodian military helicopter that disappeared over two weeks ago with two pilots on board has been spotted on a mountaintop in the Cardamom Mountains in Pursat province. The Defense Ministry announced the discovery on Facebook, but no survivors have been immediately seen. Recovery efforts are hindered by the dense forest and bad weather. The state news agency reported that one pilot’s body has been found, and efforts are ongoing to locate the other pilot.
The helicopter had been on a training flight in bad weather when contact was lost on July 12. A search was launched the following day. A photo circulating on social media shows the broken helicopter covered by foliage, but its authenticity has not been verified.
This is not the first incident involving a Chinese-made Z-9 helicopter in Cambodia. In 2014, another helicopter crashed near Phnom Penh, resulting in the deaths of two generals and two pilots.
