Vermont ravaged by severe flooding: Roads washed out, vehicles destroyed, homes left in ruins

Violent thunderstorms and torrential rain brought another wave of devastating floods to northeastern Vermont, just weeks after the flooding from Hurricane Beryl. Flash flood warnings were in effect as some areas received 6 to 8 inches of rain. In Lyndonville, roads caved in, cars were crushed, and homes were pushed off their foundations. Numerous dramatic boat rescues took place.

The fresh flooding brought scenes of destruction similar to the earlier flooding but on a smaller scale, with cars covered in mud, homes destroyed, and roads washed away. Most of the rain fell in Lyndon and Lyndonville, with some areas experiencing up to 5 inches of rain.

Swift water rescue teams conducted numerous rescues in the hardest-hit areas, including Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury. Some residents, like Jason Pilbin, helped evacuate neighbors and collect vital medications before their homes were destroyed. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries or deaths reported from this round of flooding.

The state of Vermont has experienced multiple flooding events in the past year due to climate change and the state’s mountainous terrain. The state is working to improve its infrastructure to better withstand future flooding events. Residents like Colburn are dealing with the emotional toll of the repeated devastation caused by flooding, with some feeling like the latest storm was even worse than the previous one.
