Central Arkansas Leaders Unveil Plans for $49 Million in EPA Funds for Trees, EV Chargers, and Bike Paths

Central Arkansas residents can look forward to a greener and more sustainable future thanks to nearly $100 million in grant funding from the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The funding, secured by a regional planning coalition that includes Metroplan in Central Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas, and Fort Smith, will be used for various initiatives to reduce pollution and promote environmentally friendly projects in the area.

Metroplan, as the recipient of the largest grant they have ever received, will invest in planting over 170,000 trees, installing 136 electric vehicle charging stations, and implementing energy efficiency infrastructure. Pulaski County Judge Barry Hyde emphasized the importance of balancing economic development with environmental stewardship to ensure a sustainable future for the region.

The Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, is a significant step towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions and promoting renewable energy projects across the U.S. Metroplan’s share of the grant will be allocated to various projects, including land acquisition and conservation, tree planting, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements, electric bike rebates, LED street lights, building energy efficiency upgrades, and a new cooling and heating system for Little Rock Airport.

As Metroplan Executive Director Casey Covington expressed, the initiatives funded by the grant will benefit citizens for decades to come. With a focus on renewable resources and environmental sustainability, Central Arkansas is leading the way in addressing climate change and promoting a greener future for its residents.
