Former BBC TV news presenter Huw Edwards, a prominent figure in British media, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent pictures of children. Edwards, who was the BBC’s highest-paid journalist and top news anchor until he resigned in April, appeared in court wearing sunglasses. The charges related to indecent images sent to him via WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021, with seven of the 41 images being of the most serious kind. Edwards’ lawyer clarified that his client did not create or physically make any of the images himself.
Edwards, known for announcing important news events like the death of Queen Elizabeth and leading coverage of elections and royal weddings, has not been on television for a year. His resignation in April followed allegations in the newspapers that he had paid a young person for sexually explicit photos.
The prosecutor stated that the images were sent to Edwards by an adult male, and two of the seven most serious images were pornographic videos of children aged possibly seven and nine. Edwards’ guilty plea to the charges indicated his acknowledgment of his involvement with the indecent images. The judge scheduled his sentencing for September 16. Edwards’ appearance in court marked his first public appearance since leaving the BBC, and the case has garnered significant media attention in the UK.
