French triathlete Cassandre Beaugrand made history by winning Olympic gold in the women’s triathlon, becoming the first French athlete to do so. The 27-year-old finished the race in a time of 1hr 54min 55sec, delighting the home crowd in Paris. Switzerland’s Julie Derron took silver, while Team GB’s Beth Potter claimed the bronze medal.
Throughout the race, Beaugrand, Derron, Emma Lombardi of France, and Potter of Team GB formed a leading quartet, with Derron setting the pace. At one point, a false start by many competitors benefited the leaders, who navigated the challenging currents of the River Seine during the swimming portion before tackling the cycling and running legs.
Despite the slippery road conditions and multiple crashes, the leading pack of ten athletes maintained a significant lead over their chasers. Flora Duffy of Bermuda emerged as the front-runner during the cycling leg, while Knibb of the USA led the chase group. Beaugrand and Lombardi remained strong contenders and were supported by enthusiastic crowds along the course.
As the race progressed, Duffy extended her lead, while Beaugrand, Lombardi, and others struggled to catch up. In the end, Beaugrand’s strong performance secured her the gold medal, with Derron and Potter joining her on the podium. The race showcased the athleticism and determination of these top female triathletes, with Beaugrand making history with her groundbreaking victory.
