Huw Edwards admits to creating indecent images of children | UK news

Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards has pleaded guilty to accessing indecent photographs of children, facing potential jail time. The 62-year-old admitted to three charges of making indecent images of children, including category A images of children as young as seven. Edwards had been involved in an online chat where he received 377 sexual images, including 41 indecent images of children. This marks a dramatic fall from grace for Edwards, who was a prominent figure at the BBC for 40 years, covering major political and royal events.

Edwards, who was the highest-paid newsreader at the BBC before his resignation earlier this year on medical grounds, had been suspended in July last year over allegations of receiving inappropriate images from a younger person. Despite the lack of evidence of criminal behavior, Edwards has now been charged for images shared on WhatsApp.

The sentencing guidelines for possession of indecent images of children set a starting point for a jail term at 12 months, with a range of 26 weeks to three years. The prosecution emphasized the serious impact of accessing underage images on victims and stated that the CPS will work to bring those who exploit children to justice.

Edwards is set to appear in court again on 16 September for sentencing. Mitigating factors such as his early guilty plea and mental health issues may influence the final decision. The court heard that Edwards did not keep or share any images and had expressed genuine remorse for his actions.
