Inmate found dead in suspected suicide at Varner Supermax

In a tragic incident at the Varner Supermax unit in Lincoln County, a prisoner named Jeremy Coleman was found dead in his cell in what is suspected to be a suicide. This marks the eighth suicide in Arkansas state prisons this year, already surpassing the total number of suicides recorded in all of 2023. Coleman, serving a 55-year sentence for murder and battery convictions, was pronounced dead early Friday morning despite efforts to save him.

The Arkansas State Police are investigating the incident, while the Department of Corrections will conduct an internal investigation. Coleman’s death adds to the growing concern around mental health services in state prisons, with an internal report highlighting issues like lack of proper intervention before suicides occur. Furthermore, national research has shown high rates of suicides in prison systems due to inadequate mental health treatment.

This tragedy comes in the wake of a February 2024 report from the U.S. Department of Justice’s inspector general, which criticized the Bureau of Prisons for failing to prevent nearly 200 inmate suicides over a seven-year period. The report cited policy violations and operational failures as contributing factors to these deaths. As the conversation around mental health in prisons continues, there is a pressing need for improved services and interventions to prevent further loss of life behind bars.
