Several petition groups in Arkansas submitted signatures on the deadline day in an effort to get their proposed measures on the ballot for the upcoming election. The deadline for submitting signatures was on July 3, and some groups managed to gather enough signatures to meet the requirements.
One of the groups, Arkansans for Transparency, submitted over 90,000 signatures for their proposed constitutional amendment. The amendment aims to make it easier for citizens to access public records and meetings, as well as establish an independent citizens commission to oversee legislative redistricting.
Another group, Arkansas Voters First, submitted nearly 100,000 signatures for their proposed constitutional amendment that would create an independent commission to handle redistricting instead of allowing politicians to draw the district lines.
Both groups expressed confidence in the number of signatures they collected and are hopeful that their measures will appear on the ballot for voters to decide on in the upcoming election. The signatures will now be verified by the Arkansas Secretary of State’s office to ensure they meet the required threshold.
Other petition groups also submitted signatures for various proposed measures, including one seeking to legalize recreational marijuana and another aiming to change the state’s term limits for elected officials.
As the deadline for submitting signatures has passed, these groups will now wait for the verification process to be completed before knowing if their proposed measures will be included on the ballot. The upcoming election will be an important opportunity for Arkansas voters to have a say on a variety of issues that could have a significant impact on the state.
