After over 70 years in business, Minute Man No. 14 in El Dorado, the last remaining restaurant in the historic fast food franchise, appears to have closed. Food historian Kat Robinson was the first to report the news, confirming that the restaurant’s phone has been disconnected. Owner Linda McGoogan took over the downtown El Dorado location in 1984 and has worked there since the 1970s. Known for its charcoal-grilled hamburgers and deep-dish fruit pies, Minute Man was founded in 1948 in downtown Little Rock by Wes Hall. Hall was a pioneer in the restaurant industry, introducing innovations such as the “Big M” burger and the concept of a kids meal. Despite efforts to revive the franchise with new menu items like rotisserie chicken and food trucks, Minute Man’s Jacksonville location also closed in 2022. In its prime, Minute Man had 57 locations in Arkansas and surrounding states, but now only memories remain of this beloved Southern fast food chain. The closure of Minute Man No. 14 marks the end of an era for a storied franchise that has been a staple in Arkansas since the mid-20th century.
