Independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr is set to give a speech in Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, where he is expected to announce the end of his presidential campaign and endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump. Kennedy, the son of the late Robert F Kennedy, had initially run for the Democratic nomination before going independent.
Kennedy’s decision to drop out of the race could potentially boost Trump’s chances in battleground states, where Kennedy has been drawing more support from Republicans than Democrats. Despite his campaign attracting double-digit support at its peak, Kennedy’s polling numbers have dropped to about 5 percent in recent weeks.
In an interview, Kennedy’s running mate Nicole Shanahan stated that he was considering withdrawing from the race to avoid a victory for Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. Trump, on the other hand, has expressed his admiration for Kennedy and stated that he would be open to appointing him to a cabinet role if elected.
Kennedy, an environmental lawyer and vaccine skeptic, has consistently drawn more support from Republicans in opinion polls. Trump’s willingness to appoint him to a cabinet role demonstrates the respect he has for Kennedy, whom he described as a “brilliant” and “smart” individual.
The announcement of Kennedy’s decision to drop out of the race and endorse Trump is highly anticipated and could have significant implications for the upcoming presidential election in November.
