A police convoy was ambushed by gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenades in Punjab province, Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 officers and injuries to seven others. The officers were on patrol in search of robbers in the Rahim Yar Khan district’s Kacha town when they were attacked. The gunmen, believed to be robbers rather than members of an armed group, launched the attack on the convoy after one of the vehicles broke down. This incident in Kacha, known for robber hideouts, is one of the deadliest in recent years.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for immediate and effective action against those responsible for the attack. Pakistan has experienced a surge in attacks by armed groups in recent years, with the police often being targeted. In a separate incident on the same day, gunmen attacked a school van in Punjab, killing two children and injuring six.
The government of Pakistan has been struggling for decades to combat armed groups operating in various regions of the country. Some of these groups are criminal organizations, while others, like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistan Taliban), aim to overthrow the government. The recent attacks highlight the ongoing security challenges faced by Pakistan and the need for continued efforts to address them.
