Uncommitted delegates to the Democratic National Convention, elected in protest of President Biden’s support for Israel’s actions in Gaza, requested for a Palestinian American to speak at the convention but were denied by Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign. The delegates, who were willing to commit to Harris if their request was granted, had been in communication with the campaign but were ultimately told that the answer was no. The campaign and convention organizers stated that they engaged with the Muslim and Arab community and held meetings with the Uncommitted leaders, but the request was still turned down. The DNC provided space for discussions on Palestinian issues and included speakers addressing the suffering of Palestinian civilians, noting the party platform calls for a two-state solution. The decision has left the Uncommitted delegates disappointed, with plans to sit outside the convention hall in hopes of a change of mind. Rep. Rashida Tlaib criticized the double standard of valuing Israeli children over Palestinian children, while the Uncommitted delegates expressed their frustration and disappointment at the outcome, calling out President Biden and Vice President Harris. The group faces a challenging situation as they continue to push for their request to be reconsidered at the convention.
