Russia-Ukraine conflict: Recap of significant occurrences, day 910 | Latest updates on Russia-Ukraine war

The war in Ukraine has reached its 910th day with ongoing fighting and developments. On Friday, August 23, 2024, several key incidents occurred. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, one man was killed and several people, including a 15-year-old boy, were injured after Russia struck residential buildings in the village of Bohodukhiv. In the Sumy region, two people were killed and one injured in a Russian-guided bomb attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Sumy region, where Ukraine initiated a surprise cross-border offensive earlier in the month. He stated that Ukraine’s military had taken control of a Russian village, captured prisoners of war, and mounted attacks on enemy positions in eastern Ukraine. The situation in the strategically important town of Pokrovsk remains tense, with residents being ordered to evacuate.

Russia claimed control of the village of Mezhove between Pokrovsk and Avdiivka, and alleged that Ukrainian forces attempted to attack the Kursk Nuclear Power Station without evidence. The International Atomic Energy Agency called for restraint in the region as fighting occurred nearby. Additionally, a ferry carrying fuel tanks sank in the Russian port of Kavkaz after a Ukrainian attack.

On the political and diplomatic front, the US announced plans to send $125 million in military aid to Ukraine, including air defence missiles and artillery. Ukraine’s air force utilized a US-made bomb to target a Russian platoon command post. As the conflict continues, the US embassy in Kyiv warned of heightened risks of missile and drone attacks throughout Ukraine ahead of its upcoming independence day celebrations.
