Disgraced former South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh recently won an appeal for a new murder trial from the South Carolina Supreme Court. While awaiting the hearing, Murdaugh is spending his time playing chess and working as a wardkeeper’s assistant in a state prison protective unit. Despite reports of him “living it up” in prison, the Department of Corrections denies these claims. It is reported that Murdaugh has been involved in a side gambling business, but his lawyer and the Department of Corrections deny this allegation. Additionally, Murdaugh has not faced any disciplinary sanctions since last August, when he abused phone privileges and lost canteen privileges. He also has a new job as a wardkeeper’s assistant. Another lawyer representing Murdaugh’s co-defendant alleged that he is “living it up” in prison, running a gambling ring. Murdaugh’s lawyer dismissed these claims, stating that his interactions in prison are limited, and he is in a maximum-security facility. The state Supreme Court hearing could overturn a judge’s decision denying Murdaugh’s initial attempt at a re-trial, based on allegations that a court clerk tampered with the jury that convicted him. Overall, despite allegations of wrongdoing in prison, Murdaugh’s legal team remains focused on their appellant cases and looks forward to presenting their case to the Supreme Court.
