This summer has seen multiple heat waves across the nation, but on Saturday, there was a surprising trace amount of snow in California’s mountains. Small amounts of snow were measured in and around Lake Tahoe, providing a winter wonderland scene in a country gripped by heat. The Sierra Nevada Mountains saw rain and even a vehicle collision on Interstate 80, leading to its temporary closure. The annual Burning Man festival also faced weather issues, prompting organizers to delay the opening of the main gate. Meanwhile, the Palisades Tahoe snow resort experienced falling snow, a rare sight for August. The National Weather Service noted a winter-like cold front moving in from the Pacific, bringing rain and lower temperatures to the area. Sunday morning temperatures were expected to be in the low 30s, with warnings of a potential hard freeze. While the late summer snow made for stunning imagery, it also highlighted the contrast with other parts of the country experiencing extreme heat. Record high temperatures were reported in places like Medicine Lodge, Kansas, and Lubbock, Texas. However, relief was on the way as a low-pressure system was expected to push the heat wave out and bring cooler temperatures to the Midwest by Monday.
