In July 2014, Danish journalist Nikolaj Krak reported on the spectacle of Israelis watching air strikes on Gaza with popcorn and applause. This came during Operation Protective Edge, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians. Fast forward to today, with nearly 41,000 Palestinians officially dead in Gaza, protests have erupted in Israel demanding a ceasefire and the release of Israeli captives in Gaza. The emphasis on the captives highlights the disproportionate value assigned to Israeli lives compared to Palestinians.
Despite the protests, some Israelis still advocate for further violence in Gaza, showing a disregard for Palestinian lives. The Israeli government’s actions, such as blaming Hamas for the deaths of hostages, highlight the ongoing conflict and propaganda surrounding the issue. The protests reflect growing dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s leadership, although the focus remains on the captives rather than the broader genocide in Gaza.
The continued violence, as part of Israel’s “reality war theatre,” demonstrates a pattern of disregard for Palestinian lives and a prioritization of Israeli lives. The international community must address this bias and work towards a resolution that values all lives equally. As the conflict continues, the need for a just and lasting peace becomes increasingly urgent.
