A recent NBC News national poll found that two in three voters believe the country is on the “wrong track,” with only 28% believing it is on the right track. The poll also revealed that the cost of living is a top concern for voters, with 66% of respondents saying their family’s income is falling behind. This pessimism about the country’s direction has led to relatively low levels of enthusiasm about the upcoming election, with only 65% of voters marking themselves as “very interested” in the election.
The views of the country’s direction vary along party lines, with 92% of Republicans, 36% of Democrats, and 70% of independents believing the country is on the wrong track. This pessimism has historically spelled trouble for the party in power, with an average of 66% of voters saying the country was on the wrong track in past elections when the incumbent president’s party lost the White House.
Regarding potential change, Vice President Kamala Harris has an advantage over former President Donald Trump, with 47% of voters believing she represents change compared to 38% for Trump. The poll was conducted among 1,000 registered voters, with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
