Renewables are especially vulnerable due to their new technologies and the shift away from Russian fossil fuels. Jönköping Energi in Sweden, for example, provides energy to 186,000 people through hydroelectric, wind, and solar power. In response to the growing threat, the company is working with NATO in the Nordic Pine exercise to prevent and respond to cyber attacks.
According to security expert Anders Ahlgren, cyber attacks on energy systems can create societal disruption due to our heavy reliance on electricity. The disruption of electricity can instill fear in people, creating a sense of chaos and uncertainty. The Nordic Pine exercise emphasizes the importance of communication and collaboration between governments, the military, the private sector, and the public in protecting energy infrastructure from hybrid attacks.
