Middle East Crisis Updates: Iran Missile Attack Prompts Region to Prepare for Escalation; IDF Responds with Strikes in Beirut

Israel launched at least five strikes on Beirut overnight, targeting Hezbollah sites in the southern suburbs. The strikes came after Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel. Many airlines suspended flights to the region, and Lebanon closed its airspace for two hours. Israel’s neighbors closed their airspace, and airline crews sought diversions. Iran’s chief of staff threatened to target all of Israel’s infrastructure in response to any attack.

Hezbollah claimed they forced Israeli forces to retreat after they infiltrated a Lebanese town near the border. In Gaza, nine Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air strike on a school. The IDF said they targeted Hamas, but steps were taken to minimize civilian harm. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin called Iran’s attack on Israel an “outrageous act of aggression.”

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with little information on the extent of the damage caused by Iran’s missile attack. The Iranian foreign minister said further retaliation would depend on Israel’s actions. US destroyers intercepted Iranian missiles, and the UK defense secretary emphasized the importance of preventing further escalation. Emmanuel Macron condemned Iran’s attack and urged Israel to end its military operations in Lebanon. The crisis in the region continues to unfold as tensions remain high.
