As anniversary of Gaza war approaches, large crowds gather in Europe to support Palestine

The war in Gaza, which began on October 7th of last year, has resulted in over 41,000 Palestinians being killed and has devastated the region. Almost 100 Israelis are still being held hostage by Hamas, with less than 70 thought to be alive. In the lead-up to the war’s first anniversary, numerous protests took place in major European cities in support of Palestine.

In Rome, the demonstration began peacefully but turned violent as some participants clashed with police. In London, thousands marched through the city to Downing Street amid tension between pro-Palestinian and counter-demonstrators. In Madrid, protests were peaceful, with demands for a ceasefire. In Hamburg, a peaceful demonstration took place with calls to “Stop the Genocide.” In Belgrade, around 200 people protested against their government’s support for Israel.

This marks a year of ongoing pro-Palestinian protests across Europe and worldwide that have sometimes resulted in violence. Security forces are on heightened alert in major cities due to concerns about potential terror attacks inspired by the conflict in the Middle East.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas launched an attack into Israel last year, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the taking of hostages. Since then, over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, with almost 100 Israelis still held hostage. Rallies have been planned in several other European countries as tensions continue to escalate.
