Supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan have rallied in Islamabad, demanding his release from jail despite a ban on protests and a police crackdown. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party claimed that their party leader from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Ali Amin Gandapur, had been abducted and unlawfully detained, leading to further tensions. The protests have resulted in clashes with police, and over 80 officers have been injured. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accused the protesters of disrupting diplomatic engagements in the city, including a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting. The PTI activists faced roadblocks and tear gas as they attempted to enter Islamabad. Amnesty International has condemned the government’s actions, stating that the restrictions on communication and movement infringe on people’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, continues to face trial in cases he claims have been orchestrated to prevent his return to power. The PTI alleges that the February elections were rigged, and several lawmakers have been arrested. The situation remains tense as supporters and authorities clash over the continued detention of Khan and other PTI members.
