Taiwan reports four Foxconn employees detained in China under ‘unusual’ circumstances

Four employees of Foxconn, the largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under suspicious circumstances related to a “breach of trust,” according to Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council. The employees were detained in Zhengzhou, where a major Foxconn plant is located. The council suggested that the case may involve corruption and abuse of power by Chinese security officials.

Foxconn has declined to comment on the situation, but the Mainland Affairs Council stated that the company claimed to have suffered no losses and that the employees had not harmed its interests. The council expressed concern about the impact of the case on company confidence, calling for swift investigation and resolution by Chinese authorities.

China considers Taiwan its territory, despite Taiwan’s democratic governance and objections to Chinese claims. Taiwanese businesses have invested heavily in China due to cultural and economic factors, but incidents like the detentions of Foxconn employees highlight the risks faced by Taiwanese companies operating in China.
