Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested increased security measures similar to those provided to a sitting president due to increased threats against his life. The campaign requested military assets, including armored cars, protection while flying, temporary airspace restrictions, and special forces service members for protection. The requests were made in response to alleged assassination attempts and threats from Iran.
The Trump campaign also requested special operations forces to thwart potential drone attacks, but the Secret Service requested this, not the campaign. Trump’s campaign has taken additional tactics and evasive maneuvers to mitigate threats, including being less predictable in movements. Rep. Mike Waltz requested the use of planes to detect and deter threats, but this request has not been met with action.
The Secret Service stated that Trump is receiving the highest levels of protection, including enhancements in communications, resourcing, and operations. The Department of Defense provides support for Trump’s protection, including explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, and airlift transportation. The Pentagon and Secret Service are concerned that providing more assets would violate federal law restricting the use of the military for domestic purposes.
In August, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved increased support for candidates, including providing explosive experts and technicians to protect against threats. This assistance is overseen by U.S. Northern Command and is similar to support provided for political conventions and major events. Overall, Trump is receiving the same level of protection as President Joe Biden, and additional security measures are being considered carefully to ensure compliance with federal law.
