Former President Donald Trump recently called for the use of the death penalty against migrants who kill U.S. citizens and law enforcement officers during a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada. He reiterated this sentiment at a rally in Aurora, Colorado as well. Trump has previously advocated for using the death penalty against human and drug traffickers. His anti-immigrant rhetoric has escalated as he seeks to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, blaming her for the Biden administration’s immigration policies.
Trump has depicted noncitizens entering the U.S. as a threat to Americans’ safety and the country’s well-being. During his rally in Aurora, he pledged to “rescue” the city from migrants he claimed had illegally entered and “conquered.” He accused Harris of allowing gangs and criminals to infiltrate from the “dungeons of the third world” and destroy cities like Aurora. The Mayor of Aurora, Mike Coffman, disputed these allegations, stating they were not accurate.
Trump has also made baseless claims linking immigrants to violence in other states, including spreading a false rumor during the presidential debate that Haitian immigrants were eating local pets in Ohio. Local officials denied any such reports. The former president has repeatedly used fear-mongering tactics to portray immigrants in a negative light and justify harsh measures, such as the death penalty, against those who commit crimes in the U.S.
