The ongoing rise in food prices since the start of the pandemic has placed financial strain on individuals, especially during the holiday season, making traditional Thanksgiving meals unaffordable for many. The Food Bank of the Rockies has seen a significant increase in need, with close to 500 families seeking assistance compared to the usual 150-200 families.
The Delta Confluence Park Mobile Pantry, run by the Food Bank of the Rockies, provided over 200 families with Thanksgiving essentials, ensuring that they could have a holiday meal. Clients expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the importance of such programs in helping them feed their families.
Food Bank of the Rockies distributes a variety of food items, including holiday-themed packages like frozen turkeys, stuffing, and potatoes, as well as essentials like diapers for families in need. The pantry operates without income restrictions, recognizing that even working individuals may require assistance due to high bills and food costs.
While Thanksgiving distributions have passed, the Salvation Army will be providing meals on the holiday. The Food Bank of the Rockies is seeking increased funding and support to continue its mission of feeding those in need. Donations can provide three meals for every dollar contributed, and volunteers play a crucial role in distributing food across the region.
Despite challenges, volunteers like Alex Ortega find the experience of helping others during the holidays to be rewarding and humbling. The community support is crucial in addressing food insecurity and providing assistance to those in need on the Western Slope.
