Malaysia is facing severe flooding after monsoon rains killed three people and displaced more than 90,000, prompting evacuations of nearly 100,000 people across nine states. The worst affected state is Kelantan, where more than 63,000 people were evacuated. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered all Cabinet ministers to assist in flood-prone areas and banned them from going on vacation.
In Nigeria, at least 27 people have died and over 100, mostly women, are missing after a boat capsized along the River Niger. Rescuers have recovered 27 bodies from the river, but no survivors have been found 12 hours after the incident. The boat was reportedly overcrowded, a common issue in remote parts of Nigeria due to a lack of alternative transportation routes.
In the UK, Transport Minister Louise Haigh resigned over a decade-old fraud conviction for falsely claiming her cellphone had been stolen. Haigh pleaded guilty to fraud by misrepresentation after mistakenly listing the phone as stolen when she was mugged in 2013. Haigh said her resignation would be the best way to support Prime Minister Keir Starmer and avoid distracting from the government’s work.
Off the coast of Libya, armed men in speedboats abducted women and children from a rubber dinghy carrying migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Two speedboats identified as Libyan Coast Guard fired shots, but no fatalities were reported. The men on board were mostly rescued, but the whereabouts of the women and children taken by the armed men remain unknown.
