Experts on high alert for corn fungus in Arkansas

“A potentially destructive fungal disease known as tar spot has been found on decorative corn stalks in Arkansas, raising concerns for commercial corn production in the state. The disease, caused by the fungus Phyllachora maydis, has previously been reported in Canada and the Midwestern United States, but this is the first confirmed case in the southern state of Georgia. Despite being active in more than a dozen states, tar spot has not yet been found in commercial corn fields in Arkansas.

Extension agents and plant pathologists have discovered the fungus on corn included in fall decorations at chain stores in central Arkansas. Some of the plants appeared to have originated at a farm in Illinois, while the origins of others are unclear, with labels indicating they are from the U.S. or Canada. Reports of tar spot-infected corn being sold as fall decor have also been made in several other states, adding to the concern for potential spread.

Experts are unsure about the impact of tar spot on Arkansas corn crops and whether it can be managed with fungicides. With the disease being brought into the state on decorative corn stalks, the risk of it affecting commercial corn production has increased. Farmers may face higher management costs and reduced acreage as a result of the disease.

Individuals who have purchased corn potentially carrying the fungus are advised to enclose the items in garbage bags and dispose of them properly to prevent the spread of the fungus. As the situation unfolds, researchers and agricultural stakeholders will continue to monitor and assess the potential risks posed by tar spot on Arkansas corn crops.”
