Conway School Board member pleads no contest to DUI charge

Conway School Board member Linda Hargis was convicted of drunken driving after changing her plea to no contest in Lonoke County District Court. Hargis, a self-styled patriot and Christian, was arrested in Cabot on Aug. 25 for driving while intoxicated, marking her first DWI offense at the age of 76. She reached a plea agreement to avoid trial and was found guilty on the charge, with an improper-lane-change charge being dismissed. As part of the agreement, Hargis was ordered to serve one day in jail, pay a fine of $1,040 within 30 days, and was given credit for time already served.

Despite calls for her resignation, Hargis decided to remain on the school board. A police video of her arrest showed her taking a breath test and discussing various topics, including LGBTQ+ matters in school. Hargis repeatedly admitted her guilt on the recording, expressing concern over the potential harm caused by drunken driving. By avoiding trial and accepting the plea agreement, she managed to evade media attention during a scheduled court appearance.

The incident has raised questions about Hargis’ ability to continue serving on the school board, given her conviction for a serious offense. While she has chosen not to resign, the community may continue to express concerns about her judgment and behavior following the conviction.
