Enron: A Guide for Dummies, Straight Outta Arkansas

Arkansas-based prankster Connor Gaydos has pulled off a masterful parody with the launch of enron.com, a fake website designed to look like the resurrected version of the bankrupt energy company Enron. The site is filled with stock images, logos, and jargon that could easily fit on any corporate website, along with bland video clips and vague statements about sustainability and bold visions. The launch of the website coincided with the 23rd anniversary of Enron’s bankruptcy filing in 2001.

Gaydos, known for being behind the Birds Aren’t Real social movement, created the Enron parody website along with Peter McIndoe as a way to poke fun at conspiracy theories and challenge people’s belief in human intelligence. The duo had previously gained attention for their Birds Aren’t Real movement, which posits that birds are actually government-controlled drones.

While the website is obviously a parody, some individuals have been fooled by it, with some even expressing interest in internships and job opportunities at the fake Enron company. Gaydos and McIndoe’s work in creating fictional worlds that are reported on as facts by the media highlights the power of misinformation and the susceptibility of people to believe in conspiracy theories. The faux relaunch of Enron is just another example of the duo’s skill in blurring the lines between reality and parody.
