Hegseth, facing challenges, claims Trump urged him to persevere

Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for defense secretary, is facing scrutiny for his treatment of women and his history with alcohol. Despite calls for him to drop out, Hegseth remains defiant, stating that Trump supports him to “keep fighting.” Hegseth denies mistreating women and any allegations of sexual assault. With as many as six Senate Republicans hesitant to support him, Hegseth’s path to confirmation is uncertain. He has met with key Republican senators in an effort to secure their votes. Trump is reportedly considering other candidates to lead the Pentagon in case Hegseth withdraws, including Joni Ernst, Ron DeSantis, Bill Hagerty, and Mike Waltz. Hawks for this position have already seen two candidates withdraw their names in the face of opposition.
