Dr. Ed Salo, a professor of history at Arkansas State University, has been selected as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA) for Arkansas. Salo brings a diverse background in academia, teaching, business, and politics to his new role, where he will work to bridge the gap between the Army and the civilian community. He was sworn in by Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. CASAs are special government employees who earn no wages but hold a three-star protocol status.
Salo’s dedication to the Army stems from his family’s military background, with his father serving in the Army for over 20 years and siblings also having military service. He teaches military history classes to ROTC cadets at A-State and has experience working at military bases, witnessing the professionalism and dedication of soldiers.
In addition to his duties at A-State, Salo hosts a podcast for the Center for International Maritime Security and serves on various research fellowships related to national security. His appointment as a CASA reflects his commitment to strengthening the relationship between the Army, citizens, and democratic institutions in Arkansas. Salo sees this role as a continuation of the university’s mission to support the military and its veterans.
