California and Oregon lift tsunami warnings following 7.0-magnitude earthquake

A magnitude-7.0 earthquake struck off the coast of California on Thursday morning, leading to a brief tsunami warning for parts of Northern California and southern Oregon. The earthquake occurred about 62 miles west of Ferndale, California, according to the United States Geological Survey. The warning was issued for the coast between Davenport, California, and the border of Douglas and Lane counties in Oregon, but was later canceled. Governor Gavin Newsom has activated the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to coordinate the response. Humboldt County, the community closest to the epicenter, reported minor damage but no injuries or fatalities. Around 10,000 people were left without power in the county.

The earthquake was identified as a strike-slip earthquake, which occurs when two tectonic plates slide past one another. The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network director Harold Tobin explained that earthquakes like this can trigger tsunamis by displacing the seafloor and causing waves to rush towards the shore. Strike-slip earthquakes are common in this region due to the movement of the North American and Pacific plates. While this earthquake caused some damage and power outages, the situation was quickly assessed and responded to by emergency services.
