Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) is offering patrons a chance to reduce their overdue fines while giving back to the community through the Food for Fines program. From December 8-21, each donation of a non-perishable food item or personal hygiene product will take $2 off late fees, double the amount from previous years.
Patrons can drop off up to 10 items at any CALS library, with items such as canned meats, fruits, and vegetables; boxed meals and pasta; and personal hygiene products like soaps, deodorants, and diapers being among the most requested. Donations will not only help reduce overdue fines but will also go towards stocking the Little Free Pantries at CALS, benefiting those in need.
Even those without fines are encouraged to donate, as their contributions will be randomly distributed to other accounts in need. In addition to the recommended items, ready-to-eat meals, granola bars, and individually wrapped snacks are appreciated for unsheltered individuals. However, glass or homemade items are not accepted.
The Food for Fines program is a great way for patrons to clear their accounts while supporting the community, especially during the holiday season. By participating, individuals can make a positive impact and give back to those facing food insecurity and other challenges. It’s a win-win opportunity for everyone involved.
