Illinois deputies successfully averted a potential disaster early Monday morning when they helped a pregnant woman whose brakes had failed, preventing her from plunging into a cold lake. Jaelyn Mocaby, the pregnant driver, called 911 to report her brake failure and her inability to slow down or turn off the car. Deputy Tyler Coffey responded to the call and drove ahead of Mocaby’s car, hitting the brakes on his own vehicle, which finally stopped her car just before it reached Crab Orchard Lake. If the deputies had delayed their response, Mocaby could have ended up in the water. Mocaby declined interviews, but her mother, Carol Mocaby, explained that Jaelyn was driving a car she was not very familiar with and was scared for her baby’s safety. The family is overwhelmed by the attention the incident has received, and they are focused on keeping Jaelyn calm as she is already dealing with a high-risk pregnancy. Carol Mocaby expressed gratitude for the quick response of the deputies, calling it a “complete miracle.” Deputy Coffey expressed relief at being able to help and was thankful to have been in the area at the time. The incident highlights the importance of prompt and effective emergency response in potentially life-threatening situations.
