Prominent Little Rock playwright Werner Trieschmann has suffered a stroke, as announced by his wife on Facebook. Trieschmann, a native of Hot Springs and an alumnus of Hendrix College and Boston University, is known for his award-winning plays, including “Lawn Dart” which won the 1992 Contemporary Arts Center of New Orleans New Play Competition. He was the first playwright to win the Porter Prize in Arkansas and has authored over two dozen published plays that have been staged internationally.
Trieschmann’s play “Disfarmer,” based on the life of photographer Mike Disfarmer, debuted at the ACANSA Arts Festival in 2014. He began writing the play in 2009 after being commissioned by Fayetteville’s TheatreSquared. Trieschmann’s work has been widely performed by middle schools and high schools across the United States, as well as in countries such as Canada, England, New Zealand, Romania, Japan, and Italy.
The 60-year-old playwright has been a regular contributor to the Arkansas Times and has shared his experiences in pieces such as his reflection on participating in The 24 Hour Plays.
