South Korean president faces impending impeachment vote as party vows to resist

The main opposition Democratic Party in South Korea has announced plans to vote on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law. The impeachment motion was brought forward by 191 lawmakers and requires a two-thirds majority vote in the National Assembly to pass. Yoon, who rescinded the martial law order after facing widespread public opposition, has faced criticism from both progressives and conservatives for his decision. The People Power Party, to which Yoon belongs, has opposed the impeachment motion, but some lawmakers within the party may break ranks to support it. If the impeachment motion is passed, a trial would be held by the Constitutional Court to determine the outcome, with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo serving as acting president in the interim. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell stated that Yoon’s decision to declare martial law had been a misjudgment and that it was met with swift and united opposition from the people of South Korea. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of following constitutional processes and the rule of law in handling the situation. Yoon has accepted the resignation of his defense minister, Kim Yong-hyun, who played a key role in the events leading to the declaration of martial law.
