UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, was shot dead by a masked gunman outside a New York City hotel. Shell casings found at the scene had the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written on them. Thompson was walking to a conference when he was shot in a targeted attack. Despite known threats, Thompson did not have personal security. The motive of the gunman, who is still at large, is unknown. Video footage showed the gunman approaching Thompson from behind and opening fire. Thompson was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Prior to the shooting, the gunman purchased items from a Starbucks and discarded them, which police collected as evidence. Former FBI supervisor Rob D’Amico suggested that the attack may have been a personal vendetta tied to Thompson’s company, UnitedHealthcare. It was noted that UnitedHealth Group did not provide regular personal security for its executives according to recent proxy statements. Thompson’s slaying has raised concerns about the lack of security for high-ranking business figures and the potential ease with which their locations can be found online. The investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and to locate the gunman responsible.
