Religious billboards in town promote Jesus and Mennonite beliefs

Religious billboards promoting Christmas messages and Christian beliefs have popped up around Central Arkansas this year. Organized by Larry Witherspoon, a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cabot, the billboards encourage people to “Keep Christ in Christmas” and pose questions about Christians and politics. Witherspoon clarifies that the billboards are not political but rather focus on the true meaning of Christmas and spreading Christian messages.

One billboard in Hillcrest asks ‘Christians and politics: What does Jesus say?’ The phone number on the billboard led to Christian Aid Ministries, whose representative, John Martin, explained their Anabaptist beliefs emphasizing selflessness, empathy, and non-involvement in political affairs. Although the group holds conservative views on issues like gender identity and abortion, Martin expressed a desire to create a society based on shared resources and honesty.

Christian Aid Ministries places billboards across the United States and Canada to spread their Christian message. While causing some controversy, the billboards only account for a small portion of the organization’s budget, with most of their efforts focused on global Christian outreach. Martin emphasized the importance of a community built on the principles of Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven, advocating for a society free of coercion and violence.

While promoting their beliefs, the organization takes a stance against modern societal issues and political involvement, focusing on creating an egalitarian utopia based on Christian principles. Despite their conservative views, Christian Aid Ministries aim to spark thoughtful conversations on religion and society rather than spreading fear or condemnation.
