Butterball Announces Closure of Jonesboro Turkey Processing Facility, Impacting 180 Workers

Butterball, a well-known turkey producer, has announced the closure of its Jonesboro turkey processing facility, affecting around 180 workers. The company plans to shut down the plant by February 3, 2025, with production being relocated to other Butterball facilities. The reason for the closure was not disclosed.

Employees at the plant were notified of the closure during a meeting on December 4. Those who remain until the plant’s closure will receive compensation in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications Act. It is unclear at this time if any of the affected workers will be able to transfer to other Butterball facilities.

Jay Jandrain, CEO and president of Butterball, expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging the impact on employees and their families. The company has been operating in Jonesboro for nearly 19 years, with other facilities in Huntsville and Ozark, Arkansas, as well as feed mills in Alix, Altus, and Yellville.

In the 1990s, ConAgra Foods acquired the Butterball brand before selling it to Carolina Turkeys in 2006. The closure of the Jonesboro plant marks a significant change for Butterball and its employees, with plans in place to support workers as they navigate their next career steps.
