State officials vow to increase air quality monitoring around Tontitown landfill

The state Pollution Control and Ecology Commission is moving forward with new rulemaking on tire waste and water quality following concerns raised by residents of Tontitown, Arkansas. After air monitoring conducted by the Arkansas Division of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) found dangerous levels of chemicals near the EcoVista landfill, the Department of Health recommended more testing, which ADEQ is working to secure funding for.

Tontitown residents have been protesting the lack of action for months, with one resident expressing frustration at the slow progress in addressing the air pollution issue. The mayor of Tontitown also expressed concern over the potential health impacts on the community.

In addition to addressing the Tontitown landfill issue, the commission also discussed new environmental rulemaking, including a proposed hog farm moratorium in the Buffalo River Watershed and changes to waste tire disposal and water quality standards. The Tire Accountability Program aims to reduce tire waste by consolidating recycling programs throughout the state.

The commission voted unanimously to begin revising Arkansas’s water quality standards, with a focus on updating human health criteria in surface water testing for chemicals like benzene. The Pollution Control and Ecology Commission, made up of members appointed by the governor and representatives from various state departments, meets monthly to address environmental policy issues.
