Amanda Gorman Discusses Her Latest Children’s Book

Amanda Gorman, known for her powerful poetry at President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021, has released a new book called “Girls on the Rise.” The book, illustrated by Loveis Wise, aims to inspire young people and highlight the importance of community and allyship. Gorman became a literary star at a young age, winning the National Youth Poet Laureate award in 2017 and becoming the youngest inaugural poet at Biden’s inauguration. She has since published another book and co-hosted the Met Gala.

Despite her success, Gorman faced challenges when her inaugural poem was restricted in a Florida school due to a parent’s complaint. She expressed concern about the increasing number of book bans in schools and libraries, especially those targeting authors and characters of color and the LGBTQ community. Gorman emphasized the importance of representation in literature, as it allows children to see themselves reflected and dream of their own possibilities.

Drawing inspiration from past orators and activists like Maya Angelou and Martin Luther King Jr., Gorman hopes to continue making a positive impact as a wordsmith and change maker. She has even expressed interest in running for president in 2036. Through her work and activism, Gorman strives to create a more inclusive and connected world for future generations.
